Let Grow: Developing Independence
At Woodlands, we want our children to become confident, capable and resilient young people. Alongside their academic learning, we believe it is important that children develop independence, responsibility and problem-solving skills through real-life experiences.
To support this, we have introduced the Let Grow Experience as part of our wider Personal Development curriculum.
What is Let Grow?
Let Grow encourages children to take small, age-appropriate steps towards greater independence. Each month, pupils will be invited to take part in an optional challenge at home that helps them try something new, take responsibility or develop a practical life skill.
The focus is not on completing a task perfectly. Instead, it is about building confidence by having opportunities to do things independently and learning from the experience.
Examples might include:
- Making breakfast independently
- Helping to plan and cook a family meal
- Taking responsibility for a household task
- Learning a new skill
- Organising an activity for family or friends
- Completing a task that stretches them just beyond their comfort zone
How does it work?
Each month:
- A new Let Grow theme will be introduced in a whole-school assembly.
- Families can choose whether to take part in the suggested challenge.
- Children will have an opportunity to reflect on their experiences in class.
- Successes and learning will be celebrated throughout the year.
Participation is entirely voluntary and families should always decide what is appropriate for their child, taking into account their age, maturity and individual circumstances.
Why are we doing this?
Research and experience tell us that children develop confidence when they are trusted to take responsibility, solve problems and experience appropriate levels of independence.
Through Let Grow, we hope to help pupils develop:
- Confidence
- Resilience
- Responsibility
- Problem-solving skills
- Self-belief
- Independence
- A willingness to try new things
These qualities support children both in school and beyond.
Resources
Monthly challenge sheets, activity ideas and reflection materials will be posted below.
We encourage families to explore the resources together and choose activities that are safe, suitable and meaningful for their child.
A Shared Partnership
The Let Grow Experience works best when schools and families work together. By giving children opportunities to take small steps towards greater independence, we can help them develop the confidence and resilience they need for the future.
When adults step back a little, children often surprise us with just how much they can do.
